We found out last night that the annual Cornwall agricultural show is on for the next few days, and we were planning to use the road leading through the town it is being held in. We were told by a few people that driving would be very slow, so Gill managed to navigate us through back roads that I can hardly even see on the map. It was about 2 miles and took us over an hour – very narrow roads again, stops to let cars passed (there are regular passing bays along the narrow roads), u turns to get us back on the right roads and very small direction signs.
Of course, being near by, we had to go to Port Wenn (actually Port Isaac) where Doc Martin was set. Would you believe they were filming part of the next series when we got there. We saw Louisa and Mrs Tishell (the pharmacist in the neck brace). The village is still a working fishing port and really is stunning. What a job for some of the production team to find just the right village/setting for filming. Very busy with delivery vehicles, locals, production crew and all these bloody tourists. Worked off our big breakfast again, walking around the steep roads.
Even though we knew Tintagel is touristy & kitsch, we spent an hour there and visited the old post office, a 14th century building. It was stunning, partly because of its age and appearance and partly because it was small and intimate.
On then to Bude where we are at the moment. Called into Sainsbury and bought a bottle of Italian Pinot Grigio, cooling down at the moment in the fridge. Should be nice & cool for us in about 1/2 hour. And it is!
It’s taking longer than we thought by the time we stop & look at things and use small roads, but that’s what touring is all about. As long as we get to the hotel we’ve booked in North West Wales by next Wednesday night, we’re OK. There’s a lot to see & do in just under a week, especially as there are so many spectacular sights and activities. We need to fit in a couple of “little Welsh trains” around the Mt Snowdon/Snowdonia National Park.
Hi Rick and Gill
ReplyDeleteI am amazed as to how much ground you have covered in such a short time, good to read that drivers are being courteous and friendly. I love the photos of Port Isaac and it has definately wet my appetite to visit when I eventually get over there. You have not mentioned much of the quality of the coffee in recent days has it been replaced with nice wine?
Keep applying that 30+ as Summer has well and truly arrived in the northern hemisphere. Your blog is becoming very popular at Bourke Street and everyone sends you their regards.
Take care and keep safe.
Nicholas and fam.
How good to see some of the cast of Doc Martin and interesting to see the village in person - doesn't it look a bit different than on TV. The link to the photo of Gill in the street takes you to Mrs Tishell.
ReplyDeleteIt is fabulous to read your interesting blog and follow your journey - Google Maps is getting a good workout!
Gary
Hi, How lucky were you in Port Issac, we will just have to go back maybe they will be filming. Hope that you made it to Beer so beautiful.
Gary did his duty and rang to remind Mum and Dad about Light and Easy box. Spoke today and no they had not put it out. Problem was that apparently they have about thirteen of them so I suppose that they could not decide which one to put out. Harder decision next week with fourteen. #*@&!
