Llandudno

It’s great that people are actually reading this blog and making comments, thanks.
Blaenau Ffestiniog 6110002

We drove to Llandudno via Blaenau Ffestiniog which still has piles & piles of scrap slate in huge heaps. Many of the buildings, logically, are built of slate, so it is a very grey looking town, but with the style of houses generally, looks attractive. There are a lot of road works with many new walls being built along side. Must be very labour intensive laying the slate flat up to 2 metres or so high.

After that, on the spur of the moment, we called into a National Trust Garden,  Bodnant. It was given to the National Trust comparatively recently, probably a good move by the owners of Bodnant House because of the extent and maintenance cost. The garden is just fantastic. There is a long “tunnel” of Laburnum, absolutely superb, only flowers for a couple of weeks and is flowering at the moment, later than usual. One of Bodnant Garden 6110033the most beautiful gardens we’ve ever seen. Bodnant Garden 6110025 We called in for a quick look and stayed for over an hour. So glad that we went on the Ffestiniog railway yesterday,  otherwise we wouldn’t have had the time (or inclination) to visit this incredible garden.

Betws-y-Coed 6110009

Just because we (Rick) has always liked the name Betws-y-Coed, we drove in and out to  have a look. Very attractive, tidy and judging by the number of hotels and B&Bs, very popular.

Llandudno 6110038 We’ve just checked in to a hotel in Llandudno. Booked it on line a couple of days ago. Room with no view, (55 pounds). Toilet cistern kept running & the window stayed open. Mentioned it to reception and they moved us to a superior room (95 pounds) with a great view over the water. Gill had her nails done this afternoon & Rick walked around the town. Very much a holiday town. The church just around the corner has a Welsh male choir concert on tonight, choir from Bangor, so we’re having pizza nearby & then going to the concert. Little cool this morning but warmed up this afternoon. Sitting in front of a wide open window, looking over the water & just poured a glass of wine for each of us – South African pinotage for Gill & South African Sauvignon Blanc for Rick.

There is a very graceful looking wind farm way out in the water, with 130 turbines  planned. There are 25 at the moment.

Wow!! Just got back from the concert. Words can’t describe it. Well, there were lots of words sung. It was amazing, with about 28 in the choir and a huge range of voices. Concert lasted for about 1 1/2 hours. The choir was the Dinas Bangor Male Voice Choir. Bought their CD of course. Half the songs are in Welsh and half in English. The choir sang a song to the tune which we know as “Love me tender”, which  of course Elvis Presley also used!

  1. You are breaking new ground for us now - we didn't spend much (or nearly enough) time in Wales, so thank you!
